Newsletter - Kuch Hai: Art from the Indian subcontinent
What is the newsletter about?
Kuch Hai, the title of this newsletter, is Hindi for “it has a certain something”, akin to a “je ne sais quoi”.
Every Wednesday a new piece of art with attribution is delivered to your inbox, sans analysis and context and instead intent on your raw interpretation.
Every Friday a set of long-form curated profiles and deep-dives around the artist featured on Wednesday is compiled for you to rabbit hole into a new world.
Who is the Kuch Hai reader?
Kuch Hai readers want to be shown what to chase, not be told what to think about art. Give them an artist’s name and a compelling image, and they’ll open ten browser tabs, cross-reference dealers, find the monograph, and plan a trip to see a piece in person. They want curation as a catalyst. When they finally hang that print or drop that reference it is an autobiography before decoration.
Why did I start Kuch Hai?
I cultivate and demonstrate my taste and perspective on the world through art I love; seeing visuals that have personal significance to my memories and experiences is deeply gratifying. I was frustrated by how few thoughtfully curated resources exist around art coming from environments I am shaped by. Even major digital archives (Google Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art) have a dearth of South Asian artist representation.
Kuch Hai fixes this, week after week. It is the premier archive for diverse and thought-provoking art from the subcontinent.
